What is a drug ?

There are many different types of substances out there that can be considered a drug which can be found in many places around the world including U.K (United Kingdom), U.S.A (United States of America), Australia, Canada, Germany, Russia, Poland, Netherlands and even India these fall into several categories some of which you may already know of by name.

The types of different drugs

Marijuana/Medical Marijuana

Cannabis which is also known as pot among many other names, is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant used primarily for medical and recreational purposes. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive component of cannabis, which is one of the 483 known compounds in the plant, including at least 65 other cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD).Cannabis can be used by smokingvaporizingwithin food, or as an extract.

New psychoactive substances

psychoactive drug, Also know as Legal Highs psychopharmaceutical, or psychotropic drug is a chemical substance that changes nervous system function and results in alterations in perceptionmoodconsciousnesscognition, or behavior. These substances may be used medically; recreationally; to purposefully improve performance or alter one’s consciousness; as entheogens for ritual, spiritual, or shamanic purposes; or for research. Dissociative Drugs

Dissociatives are a class of hallucinogen which distort perception of sight and sound and produce feelings of detachment – dissociation – from the environment and/or self. Although many kinds of drugs are capable of such action, dissociatives are unique in that they do so in such a way that they produce hallucinogenic effects, which may include sensory deprivationdissociationhallucinations, and dream-like states or trances. Some, which are nonselective in action and affect the dopamine and/or opioid systems, may be capable of inducing euphoria. Many dissociatives have general depressant effects and can produce sedationrespiratory depressionanalgesiaanesthesia, and ataxia, as well as cognitive and memory impairment and amnesia.

Depressants

depressant, or central depressant, is a drug that lowers neurotransmission levels, which is to depress or reduce arousal or stimulation, in various areas of the brain. Depressants are also occasionally referred to as “downers” as they lower the level of arousal when taken. Stimulants or “uppers” increase mental and/or physical function, hence the opposite drug class of depressants is stimulants, not antidepressants. Depressants are widely used throughout the world as prescription medicines and as illicit substancesAlcohol is a very prominent depressant. Alcohol can be and is more likely to be a large problem among teenagers and young adults. When depressants are used, effects often include ataxiaanxiolysispain reliefsedation or somnolence, and cognitive/memory impairment, as well as in some instances euphoriadissociationmuscle relaxation, lowered blood pressure or heart raterespiratory depression, and anticonvulsant effects. Depressants also act to produce anesthesiaCannabis may sometimes be considered a depressant due to one of its components, cannabidiol. The latter is known to treat insomnia, anxiety and muscle spasms similar to other depressive drugs.

stimulants

Stimulants (also often referred to as psychostimulants or colloquially as uppers) is an overarching term that covers many drugs including those that increase activity of the central nervous system and the body, drugs that are pleasurable and invigorating, or drugs that have sympathomimetic effects. Stimulants are widely used throughout the world as prescription medicines as well as without a prescription (either legally or illicitly) as performance-enhancing or recreational drugs. The most frequently prescribed stimulants as of 2013 were lisdexamfetaminemethylphenidate, and amphetamine. It was estimated in 2015 that the percentage of the world population that had used cocaine during a year was 0.4%. For the category “Amphetamines and prescription stimulants” (with “amphetamines” including amphetamine and methamphetamine) the value was 0.7%, and for Ecstasy 0.4%.

psychedelics

Psychedelics are a subset of hallucinogenic drugs whose primary effect is to trigger non-ordinary states of consciousness (known as psychedelic experiences or “trips” ) via serotonin 2A receptor agonism. This causes specific psychological, visual and auditory changes, and often a substantially altered state of consciousness. The “Classical” psychedelics, the psychedelics with the largest scientific and cultural influence, are mescalineLSDpsilocybin, and DMT.

Opioids

Opioids are substances that, when reaching opioid receptors, have effects similar to those of morphine. Medically they are primarily used for pain relief, including anesthesia. Other medical uses include suppression of diarrhea, replacement therapy for opioid use disorder, reversing opioid overdose, and suppressing cough. Extremely potent opioids such as carfentanil are approved only for veterinary use. Opioids are frequently used non-medically for their euphoric effects or to prevent withdrawal. Side effects of opioids may include itchinesssedationnausearespiratory depressionconstipation, and euphoria. Long-term use can cause tolerance, meaning that increased doses are required to achieve the same effect, and physical dependence, meaning that abruptly discontinuing the drug leads to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The euphoria attracts recreational use and frequent, escalating recreational use of opioids typically results in addiction. An overdose or concurrent use with other depressant drugs like benzodiazepines or alcohol commonly results in death from respiratory depression.

Over the counter drugs

Over-the-counter (OTCdrugs are medicines sold directly to a consumer without a requirement for a prescription from a healthcare professional, as opposed to prescription drugs, which may be supplied only to consumers possessing a valid prescription. In many countries, OTC drugs are selected by a regulatory agency to ensure that they contain ingredients that are safe and effective when used without a physician‘s care. OTC drugs are usually regulated according to their active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) rather than final products. By regulating APIs instead of specific drug formulations, governments allow manufacturers the freedom to formulate ingredients, or combinations of ingredients, into proprietary mixtures. The term over-the-counter (OTC) refers to a medication that can be purchased without a medical prescription. In contrast, prescription drugs require a prescription from a doctor and should only be used by the prescribed individual. Some drugs may be legally classified as over-the-counter (i.e. no prescription is required), but may only be dispensed by a pharmacist after an assessment of the patient’s needs.

the Dangers of drugs

Substance Abuse

Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, is use of a drug in amounts or by methods which are harmful to the individual or others. It is a form of substance-related disorder. Differing definitions of drug abuse are used in public health, medical and criminal justice contexts. In some cases criminal or anti-social behaviour occurs when the person is under the influence of a drug, and long term personality changes in individuals may occur as well. In addition to possible physical, social, and psychological harm, use of some drugs may also lead to criminal penalties, although these vary widely depending on the local jurisdiction. Drugs most often associated with this term. these include: alcoholamphetaminesbarbituratesbenzodiazepinescannabiscocainehallucinogensmethaqualone, and opioids. The exact cause of substance abuse is not clear, with the two predominant theories being: either a genetic disposition which is learned from others, or a habit which if addiction develops, manifests itself as a chronic debilitating disease. In 2010 about 5% of people (230 million) used an illicit substance. Of these 27 million have high-risk drug use otherwise known as recurrent drug use causing harm to their health, psychological problems, or social problems that put them at risk of those dangers. In 2015 substance use disorders resulted in 307,400 deaths, up from 165,000 deaths in 1990. Of these, the highest numbers are from alcohol use disorders at 137,500, opioid use disorders at 122,100 deaths, amphetamine use disorders at 12,200 deaths, and cocaine use disorders at 11,100.

not knowing the origin of drugs

Another under-looked danger is is not knowing the Origin or the Contents of such said drugs that you may have acquired wherever it may be. As this can lead to complications accuring on extremely dangerous substances that you may not even know existed, and that in fact leading to medical support being unable to identify what drugs you may have consumed in time to help.
